What factors affect window energy efficiency ratings?

Did you just decide you need window replacement? Well, the first step you need to take is to discuss with a window replacement contractor about the energy efficiency ratings. These can make a huge difference in the lifespan of your new windows and interior comfort. If you’re unsure how to read energy efficiency ratings on window replacement, you should read this. Our experts share their insights next!

U-factor

U-factor is an essential measurement rating in new windows. It indicates how well replacement windows can prevent heat from escaping. The U-factor is between 0.2 and 1.20, the lower the value indicating the least heat a window will allow to escape. Choosing replacement windows with the lowest U-factor available will offer you the best insulation solution for long-term purposes.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient

The solar heat gain coefficient indicates how well a window can manage unwanted heat accumulation from the sun. The coefficient ranges between 0 and 1. The lower the SHGC, the better the window will act to sun exposure. If you aim to diminish your energy bills, you should choose lower SHGC values.

Visible Transmittance

VT represents the measurement of the amount of daylight allowed through a window. This rating is essential if you want to manage natural light in rooms like the bedroom. The value for VT ranges from 0 to 1. If you want more natural light inside, you should opt for a higher VT value.

Air leakage

Air leakage tells you the quantity of air allowed through a window. This value represents the cubic feet of air passing through a square foot of window every minute. The lower the value, the less air is allowed inside. This energy efficiency rating ensures your replacement windows insulate adequately and provide the best energy efficiency for your home.

Condensation resistance

Another factor that affects window energy efficiency ratings is the condensation resistance. This is an optional value, and manufacturers aren’t obliged to include it on the label. Still, the higher the value, the more resistant to condensation a window is.

The takeaway

These are the main factors that affect window energy efficiency ratings. Our experts say it is always best to pay close attention to the labels of new windows. Discussing with a window replacement contractor about your needs and expectations can help you decide which is the best solution for your home. New windows represent a long-term investment, so you should opt for a premium energy efficiency rating.
