4 Home Renovation Tips for First-time Home Buyers in Boston

Boston’s inventory of real estate listings is full of old houses in need of renovation. Buying and remodeling a home is a great way to find a good deal on a house and make it your own. However, if poorly planned, it can lead to a lot of mistakes, especially for first-time homebuyers.

Home renovations have plenty of potential shortcomings, but you can overcome most of them if you plan carefully. Here are important renovation tips.

  1. Do Your Research

Yes, before you buy any of the Boston homes for sale property listings, do your research. Renovating your new home does magic in making it truly yours. But that’s not all, it is also an amazing way to get more for your money.

And yes, renovation costs may make it challenging to meet your goals. But don’t worry. Consider getting estimates for the renovation costs while negotiating for the home purchase price. Ensure you can afford the two costs.

Always have the home inspected by a professional especially if it is in bad shape. Ensure you renovate without spending a fortune on electrical or foundation to make your home safe.

  1. Know the Right Order

You want to renovate your house, but which renovation project do you start with? Well, there are no set rules for this question, but tackling the renovation work logically helps smoothen the process and avoid the need to re-do any aspect of the project.

If you’re still in dilemma on what to do, consider the following:

  • Remove and strip of floorings, walls, and other features
  • Improvements to the home structural elements like walls and floors
  • Improve plumbing, wiring, and heating to make your home safe
  • Plastering, flooring, and painting
  • Kitchen and bathroom renovations
  • Decorate your home

With this order, you’ll get through the renovation as quickly as possible and move into your new house. however, if you’re to renovate whilst living in the house, plan around the family’s needs. Here, you can do one room at a time instead of focusing on the whole house.

  1. Check the Cost

Always count the cost when planning a remodeling exercise. The reason, some rooms require more money than others to remodel. For instance, if your kitchen requires a complete makeover, you can pay around $14,000. If the house requires a master bedroom renovation, the cost drops to around $8,000.

Remember some rooms are more expensive to remodel than others, so if the house needs renovation here, ensure the purchase price accounts for these additional costs.

  1. Consider How Much Stress You Can Handle

The word renovation means a lot of different things to different people. Some want to make a few cosmetic updates to bring their property back into 2021.

Others want to get their hands dirty by knocking down some ways to create their dream open-plan layout.

With these projects on your mind, it’s not always about the budget. Consider your main motives for doing this work and the extent of disruption that you can handle.

Conclusion

Buying some property in need of some work is one way to climb a couple of rungs on the property ladder. It is the best way to move to your preferred postcode without breaking the bank on the new home.
