How to Create a Patio Your Family Will Enjoy for Years to Come

Introduction

Patios get a lot of attention. They are one of the most prominent parts of your home and are designed with love since you and your family will spend a substantial amount of outdoor time right here. You can either search for “paving companies near me” and hire professionals to build your dream patio or do it yourself. Let’s check out how you can create a patio your family will enjoy for years.

The Details

  1. Patio layout – The layout of the patio will be guided by how you want to use the patio and the types of furniture you plan to place in it. If you plan to use the patio for entertaining guests, you may need a dining or lounging set or a combination of both and the space to accommodate them. You’ll also need to figure out if the patio would have pergolas or other types of covers.

After the active layout is designed, you need to move on to the negative space of the patio. That includes spaces and gaps at the edges of the patio and between furniture sets. Make sure that the negative spaces are at least 3 feet wide for ease of movement and accessibility. They also make the patio look less cluttered. Also, make sure that you have railings around your terraced or raised patio so that seats aren’t topped off.

Try to draw in scale right from the beginning so that you have an accurate estimate of what’s possible inside the space. That way you can accommodate and change plating ideas and even figure out if you can fit in an outdoor kitchen. You can double-check the boundary of the patio with a rope.

The size of your patio usually depends on the size of your backyard and whether you want the patio to be a dominating feature or a backyard element. As a general rule, it’s best to size the patio according to the number of people it would regularly host. Usually, designers allocate around 25 square feet per person while designing patios. So, if you have a family of four, it’s best to reserve 100 square feet of your backyard for the patio.

  1. Create zones – When homes are designed, they are divided into zones, sections, and rooms. You need a similar approach while designing your patio. Creating zones for your patio from the start helps you avoid unnecessary problems later on. For instance, if you don’t plan on an outdoor kitchen, the dining area of your patio should be placed close to the kitchen and needs to be shaded. If you designate zones, later on, it may be very expensive to change things during the construction.

Similar to the dining zone’s proximity to the kitchen, a lounging zone should be surrounded by fragrant flower beds or surrounded by pots with flowering plants. You can also choose to surround the lounging zone with an aromatic herb garden that helps in the kitchen and creates a pleasant ambiance for the lounging zone.

On the other hand, you don’t need to worry about zoning if you plan to keep an open and highly flexible patio. For instance, if you plan for a patio with light and foldable furniture that can be moved or transformed to change it into a lounging area, all the power to you. However, zones are very important for fixed patios and should be assigned from the start.

  1. Patio materials – While choosing patio materials you have plenty of options. You can follow the latest trends or think long-term. That means choosing paving materials that reflect different aspects of your home’s architecture or its indoor design for a synergic look. You can also use patterns for patio paving. It helps you create interest and tie the whole layout together.

If you’re considering adding decks to your patio, you’re better off with hardwood. They last very long, look amazing and add a lot of character to your patio. You can choose anything from tweak and ipe to iroko. You can go the extra step and get boards with concealed milled joints. This eliminates the need for screws and other hardware and provides you with a cleaner look.

To add more depth to your patio’s exit or zones that are adjacent to the garden, bricks, and stones may be ideal. Source large bricks that make them belong to the overall design and try to source your stones locally. Locally sourced stones are better for the environment and can also complement your gardening landscaping way better than granite sourced from thousands of miles away.

  1. Add plants – While designing the patio, you’ll notice that there are a lot of hard edges in and outside different zones. Even if the hardscaping is made out of rounded stones and other such materials, it lacks that organic feel. You can solve this by adding planting pockets to your patio. They help to soften the overall design and can also create divisions between different patio zones.

Take a look around your backyard and choose a planting scheme that integrates the patio with the rest of the outdoor space. You may consider a few unique specimen trees and shrubs in exquisite containers for a stylish finish. Make sure they are limited and don’t become too dominant on the patio design.

You may also consider scent and privacy while considering plants for the patio. For instance, you can grow hedges along the lounging zone to create a more private space for you and your guests. Otherwise, you can add fragrant blooming plants to create a calming environment.

Conclusion

Designing a dream patio isn’t easy. You’ll spend hours polishing the design and making adjustments or changes. Even after you come up with a perfect design, you may be hindered by the budget or other factors and make further changes or delay the patio construction. Either way, when you have the final design, you can search for “paving companies near me” and hire professionals to build the patio of your dreams.
