The Cost of Bay Window Installation (Guide for Homeowners)

Bay windows are notably one of the most expensive window types to get, but why is that? There are a lot of reasons why bay windows can be pricey, so if you’re in the market for one, or more, then you’re in the right place. We’re going to go over bay window pricing, how it compares to other prices, and why they are more expensive. Let’s dive in to find out more about the cost of bay window installation.

What Is A Bay Window?

Bay windows are more complex than people might think. Bay windows are typically windows with multiple panels that protrude outwards. You may see this with a bench or seating area on the inside or shelving. Bay windows are large and usually take up quite a bit of space, making it a complex window design.

How Much Does It Cost To Install A Bay Window?

Installing a bay window can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $7,000 for the entire project. This is a large price range because the cost of bay window installation depends on many different factors. Bay windows are complex and large, and if you’re installing brand new windows then you must consider the labor costs to do the construction piece of it. On average, homeowners typically spend $1,900 for bay window installation near me.

Factors That Affect Bay Window Installation Cost

As we mentioned, many factors go into the cost of installing bay windows. Window installation in general can be a complex project, but bay windows are more complex due to the way they are built. The protruding window design makes for a more difficult install, plus it usually has multiple panels. Regardless, let’s go into factors that affect bay window cost.

Replacement or Install: One main factor to consider is if it’s a bay window install and there is already space there for a window, or if it is a new window design where a hole will need to be made for the window. Construction to form a new window can be costly, so if you are going that route then your cost will be much higher than a replacement, but that’s to be expected.

Size: The size of the bay window matters a lot. Some bay windows can be simple and small, while others can take up entire walls. Some companies will charge per size as well.

Design or Style: Some of the bay windows have three panes, while others might have four or just two. The shape, number of windows, and other design aspects affect the pricing as well. Some styles might include the Box Bay or the Full Bay.

Another design aspect to keep in mind is if you’re planning to do something with the space below the window, such as make it a seating area or shelving.

Glass Type: Energy efficient or other specialty glasses will most definitely affect the price. If you’re looking into weather resistance or any added protection then this will increase the pricing as well.

Does A Bay Window Add Value To Homes?

Bay windows actually do add value to your home. The amount of value depends on the style, price, size, and more, but you can expect to get a 73% ROI for newly installed bay windows when selling your home. They are also a huge selling feature to potential buyers as it’s beneficial to the home.

Which Is Cheaper: Bay or Bow Window?

Bow windows are very similar to bay windows but they have more curves to them, which makes them more complex. Bow windows can cost on average $3,600 per window, while bay windows can cost about 2,900. So they are both on the pricier side and they have very similar styles, but the bay windows are a bit cheaper than the bow windows. However, both give off similar styles and both are pricier window options.

Are Bay Windows Worth It?

Bay windows are a little pricey, but they are totally worth it. The window design lets in tons of sunlight, and it also adds a more homey and earthy feel. It’s an amazing selling point to potential buyers, plus you can expect a good ROI. Bay windows can also serve as a dual purpose since you can do something with the indented space of the wall such as make a seating area or storage unit, giving the window space even more function.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the cost of bay windows is quite pricey, but they are very worth it. You can expect to get a good return on your investment, it’s a great selling feature, plus it’s useful and good for your home. Keep in mind all of the factors that go into the bay window installation so you know a bit more about what to expect.
