6 Electrical Safety Mistakes You’re Probably Making

Do you know how to stay safe around electricity? It’s important to be aware of the dangers and take precautions when working with or near electrical equipment. While your trusted Newtown Square electrical company will always be there to help you out, it is very important that everyone in your family takes the time to learn about electrical safety.

Read about the 6 most common electrical safety mistakes people make on this page. If you’re careful to avoid these mistakes, you’ll be much less likely to get injured.

Not having a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI): A GFCI protects you from electrocution by shutting off power to a circuit when it detects a ground fault. Ground faults occur when there’s a break in the path of the electrical current, usually due to a damaged or frayed wire. GFCIs are required by law in many areas, so if you don’t have one, get one installed as soon as possible.

Using the wrong kind of extension cord: Did you know that there are different types of extension cords for different purposes? Some are meant for indoor use only, while others can be used outdoors. Make sure you’re using the right type of cord for your needs.

Overloading outlets: Overloaded outlets are a fire hazard. If you need to plug in multiple devices, use a power strip with built-in circuit protection.

Not replacing worn out or damaged cords: Worn out or damaged cords can cause fires or shocks. If a cord is frayed or otherwise damaged, replace it immediately.

Running cords under rugs: This is a fire hazard. Cords can overheat when they’re covered, which can start a fire.

Using the wrong light bulb: Using the wrong light bulb in a fixture can cause a fire. Make sure you’re using the right size and type of bulb for your fixtures.

These are just a few of the electrical safety mistakes you might be making. Be sure to stay safe and avoid accidents by taking some basic precautions. And if you ever have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your local electrical company for help. Call the pros now!
